Movie Review: Warcraft: The Beginning *Spoilers Alert*

The universe Chris Metzen created gets its first film adaptation.

Because their homeworld, Draenor, has become a wasteland, the Orcish Horde, led by the warlock Gul’dan, invade Azeroth, the home of the Alliance of humans, elves, and dwarves. The battle for survival is further complicated by the use of Fel magic which grants immense power at the cost of life. I first played Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos several years ago when my pastor was into the game and he invited us to try it. Before DotA (Defense of the Ancients) came along, we would play the real-time strategy game from Blizzard for hours. I was a Night Elf player who later switched to Undead. Eventually, I was curious about the story behind it and played the campaign for several days. What I discovered got me hooked on the massive world of Warcraft. Being intrigued with characters such as Arthas Menethil (human), Thrall (orc), and Illidan Stormrage (night elf), I read the history of the war between humans and orcs. It’s nice to see the tale fleshed out on the big screen.

While not a perfect movie especially to film critics, Warcraft: The Beginning is immensely satisfying for fans of the games or even just of fantasy. There’s a lot of happenings and anyone not familiar with the universe will get lost in the midst of the chaos. In an attempt to make a fitting review whilst clarifying certain aspects of the film, what I’ll do is list 9 characters in the movie and how their story is connected with one another. In no particular order, they are:

1.) Anduin Lothar

The commander of the armies of Stormwind is a legend in Azeroth. More than the king, he is the reason for the peace in the land. However, the invasion of the orcs threatens that which he strongly fought for. But it is during this event that he meets and falls in love with…

2.) Garona

A half-orc, half-dranei hybrid, Garona is captured by the Alliance. The queen, however, believed that she is not an enemy and she becomes part of the Alliance’s armies. When they proceed to confront the Horde at the portal, they are overwhelmed by the orcs infused with demon magic. The only way to survive was to kill…

3.) King Llane Wrynn

With defeat inevitable, the ruler decides to let Garona take his life to earn the trust of the orcs. This didn’t sit well with Lothar, though, as he did not know of the arrangement. He charged through the battlefield and gets plunged into a Mak’gora (Duel of Honor) with Blackhand. He is triumphant and escapes…

4.) Gul’dan

Some of the power-hungry orcs were easy prey for the warlock. He enticed them with a promise of overwhelming power at a price. However, the Frost Wolf Clan is not easily swayed by his trickery. Realizing that Gul’dan’s penchant for taking life will ultimately lead to the destruction of Azeroth as well, the orcs seek the help of the humans to put an end to the warlock’s form of slavery. The leader of the clan challenges him to a duel but Gul’dan ends up defeating…

5.) Durotan

His love for his people gave him the courage to oppose the tyranny of Gul’dan. This would eventually lead to him sacrificing his life for the clan and the rest of the Orcish Horde. While the fight is not yet finished, his mantle is taken up by his friend…

6.) Orgrim Doomhammer

The proud warrior has been a stalwart support of his chief but nearly gave in to Gul’dan’s temptation. He comes back to his senses just in time to assist Draka’s escape with Durotan’s green-skinned son…

7.) Thrall

At the end of the movie, Thrall is found by a human. The next film will probably reveal more information about his growing up years as he later becomes the Warchief of the Horde. It is during this time that he is sought out by…

8.) Medivh

Medivh is part of a line of champions called the Guardians of Tirisfal. As he is the only survivor of the said order, he is dubbed as the Last Guardian. His soul is tainted with Fel magic, though, and this corruption pushes him to bring the Orcs into Azeroth. His secret was eventually found out by…

9.) Khadgar

Once a member of the Kirin Tor mages, the magical city of Dalaran’s ruling council, Khadgar was apprentice to the guardian before he found out that there was something wrong with his master. In the end, he was the one who unraveled the possession of Medivh and the plan to bring the orcs into Azeroth.

Blizzard has got their work cut out for them. They need to please casual moviegoers as well as diehard fans of the games. This recent outing was good but leaves much to be desired.
